John A. Engel, Jr.

John A. Engel, Jr.

John A. Engel Jr., known as Jack to his friends and Poppy Jack to his grandchildren, a retired advertising executive, sailor, devoted husband, father and grandfather, died Monday at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan after suffering a stroke in September.

Born and raised in Stamford, Jack was the son of Rose and John A. Engel, the first principal of Rippowam High School and the first national wrestling champion for Lehigh University. Jack was the grandson of Lillian and Charles Engel, the publisher of the Stamford Advocate.

Always a “Mad Man,” Jack began his advertising career at Wahlstrom & Co, worked at Ogilvy & Mather and retired after 25 productive years at Young & Rubicam of 285 Madison Avenue.

Jack was an avid sailor, a superb golfer and trumpet player. He started sailing as a young boy off the beach in Stamford’s Shippan Point in the 50’s, took Susan sailing with him in high school and continued until he had visited every island in the Caribbean, his favorite being tiny Bequia in the Grenadines. He attended Operation Sail in New York in 1976 and witnessed many America’s Cup races in Newport and later New Zealand. With his family he restored an antique schooner, the Gretchen, which they sailed out of Rowayton to Groton Long Point, Nantucket, Mystic, and Newport.

He was an active member of St. Aloysius parish, a regular at the 7 a.m. daily Mass, a Eucharistic Minister and part of the Emmaus Community. Jack was a member of the Senior Men’s Club of New Canaan, the Ischoda Yacht Club and Wilson Point Yacht Club. A long-suffering Red Sox fan, he was at Fenway when they lost in 1967 and 1975 and was finally redeemed in 2004.

Jack will be remembered for his meatballs. He was masterful in the kitchen. Jack pored over the New York Times recipe section on his daily commute and used it for inspiration to make wonderfully creative meals. Self taught, his enthusiasm and passion translated into great culinary talent.

He was generous, kind, funny and remarkably intelligent. He was home every night for his family. His great taste and attention to detail was apparent in so many renovation projects including the Flower House in East Hampton, the Finch and Weed Houses in New Canaan, 48 Church Street in Newport, the antique schooner, and finally the L’Hammock island house.

Jack is survived by his wife of 50 years, Susan C. Engel, a local realtor, and two children, John A. Engel III and Gretchen (Mrs. Keith) Gertsen, both of New Canaan. Jack is also survived by eight grandchildren in New Canaan: Madeleine, Lillian, Charlotte, Casey, Carolyn Rose, Mark, Max, and Lars.

Born in Rutherford N.J., she fell in love with Phil Huffard, married, moved often and settled in New Canaan in 1954 to raise their five children. Mary Ann Donnelly, 87, mother of resident

Mary Ann Donnelly passed away Sunday, All Saints Day, Nov. 1, 2015, at Wood River Village Retirement Center in Bensalem, Pa. She was 87.

Her life was marked by love of her family, passion for learning, but most importantly, kindness.

Mary was the loving wife of Thomas William Donnelly for 65 years. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Victoria Dement. She was the dearest mother of Mary E. Fielding (Alan), Claire M. Swift (Butch), Thomas M. Donnelly (Tammy), and Michael D. Donnelly (Susan). She also is survived by nine cherished grandchildren, Cameron, Megan, Caitlin, Aileen, James, Kelsey, Colleen, Maggie, and Michael.

Raised in Burlington, Pa. Mary began working at the local drug store on her 15th birthday. Just prior to her high school graduation, owners of the store offered to send her to pharmacy school in return for her working as a pharmacist upon her graduation. She eschewed this benevolent offer in favor of her passion for nursing. She would graduate from Bryn Mawr as a cadet nurse in 1948. The need for Army nurses having diminished, she began her nursing career at Cooper Hospital in Camden, N.J. followed by Mount Holly Hospital, and McKinley in Trenton, N.J.

Raising her four children next became her priority. She sewed suits for her sons, and dresses for her daughters; taught them to sing all her favorite songs, and above all, provided consistent demonstration of her kind and gentle approach to life’s issues. As the last of the children entered school, she picked up her nursing career in the coronary care unit at Lower Bucks Hospital, then Livengrin Recovery Center in Bensalem, and finally Bensalem High School where she cared for students for eight years. Along the way, she attained her MS in Nursing having written all of her papers on a manual typewriter. Mary and Tom loved to travel, having visited two of her children in Germany on several occasions, and ventured to many other European and North American destinations as well as Australia. One of their most memorable experiences was a train trip across the country starting in Trenton and culminating in Seattle, Wash.

Mary had many talents and interests throughout her life. She was a bugler in the Burlington VFW Cadet Corps. She played the accordion, sang, knitted, sewed, and read voraciously, something she learned from her father. She will be missed for all of these qualities, but mostly for her kindness, and love for her family.

Family and friends wereinvited to attend Mary’s viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Molden Funeral Chapel, 133 Otter St., Bristol, Pa., and from 9:30 a.m. until her funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at St. Ephrem Roman Catholic Church, 5400 Hulmeville Road, Bensalem, Pa. Interment will be held privately at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made in Mary’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).Molden Funeral Chapel, Bristol www.moldenfuneralchapel.com

Sven W. Englund

Sven W. Englund

Sven William Englund entered the church triumphant in peace on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015 in    Norwalk Hospital at the age of 94, after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing. He was the husband of the late Alice Ruth Englund.

Sven was born on Feb. 20, 1921 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the only child of Captain Sven A. N. Englund and Anna Peterson Englund. He graduated from Boy’s High School and went on to earn his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Polytechnic University in Brooklyn.

Sven worked  on the World War II butadiene program and then in the U.S. Army in the War Department Technical Division. His professional career was spent in the design and construction of chemical plants with emphasis, in the last 25 years, on air and water pollution abatement. He was  employed at Olin Corporation headquarters and John Brown E & C Inc., both in Stamford. He remained active in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers well past his retirement.

Sven married Alice Ruth Moeller on Sept. 2, 1950 at the Parkville Congregational Church in Brooklyn. Sven and Alice lived for several years in Cincinnati, Ohio where their son, Sven Richard, was born, moved to Emmaus, Penn. where their daughter Laura Kristen was born and finally moved to New Canaan in 1958.

In New Canaan, Sven was active as an adult leader of Boy Scout Troop 1. He was appointed to the Environmental Commission where he served as chairman for nine years and then on the successor Inland Wetlands Commission for 26 years. He earned a State of Connecticut Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in protecting the environment and wetlands, and a “Sven Englund Day” in New Canaan proclamation from the first selectman for Dec. 15, 2014. He was also active in the Senior Men’s Club of New Canaan, the Poinsettia Club and many other civic activities.

Sven loved his church, the United Methodist Church of New Canaan, through worship, service and the fellowship in Christ with its members. Sven and Alice traveled widely in the U.S. and around the world with their family and friends and even achieved one of Alice’s dreams to set foot on Antarctica. Time spent with Alice’s extended family around Oneida, N.Y. held special meaning for him. He always returned to Sweden to visit with his family and especially his cousins Ingrid Englund and Birget Ellstrom, both deceased, and his beloved cousin Kerstin Hagberg who survives him.

After Alice’s death, Sven moved to the New Canaan Inn where he enjoyed participating in activities with his new and dear friends. Sven is survived by his son Sven, married to Rita, of New Canaan, and their children Kristen and Sven A.; and his daughter Laura, married to Fred Worstell, of Bernardsville, N.J., and their two children Carolyn, married to Zachary Hvizdak, and Matthew.

A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church of New Canaan, 165 South  Avenue, on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016 at 1 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Waveny LifeCare Network, 3 Farm Road, New Canaan, CT 06840.

Obituary: Karin E. Jones, 63, daughter of resident

Karin Ellen (Kay) Jones, 63, of Swanzey, N.H. died early Thursday morning, Dec. 10, 2015, at the Applewood Care & Rehabilitation Center in Winchester, N.H. following a period of declining health.

Kay was born on Nov. 4, 1952, in Norwalk, Conn. to William H. and Ellen A. (Skoglund) Jones. She grew up in New Canaan and was a 1970 graduate of New Canaan High School. She went on to attend Keene State College, earning a bachelor of science in Physical Education. After graduation she moved to Maine where she lived for a few years. She went back to school there, earning a bachelor of arts and a masters in English. After leaving Maine, she taught in Ft. Collins, Colo. and Fairfield, Iowa, before returning to Keene to teach at her alma mater, Keene State College. She was an associate professor at Keene State College for three years.

Kay was a strong and courageous woman who approached life with remarkable intensity and passion. She loved music, travel, the outdoors, nature and wild animals, and all things Swedish. She was deeply spiritual, practiced Transcendental Meditation most of her life, and felt a particular kinship with Native American culture and traditions. She traveled the U.S. as well as overseas to visit her extended Swedish family. She had a deep love for N.H., and her home in Swanzey, where she had wonderful gardens and took care of the wildlife as well as her own pets. She was a joyful caretaker of the woods behind her home. She designed and built a lovely peace garden in the center of which she installed a four-sided pole on which the words “May Peace Prevail on Earth” is inscribed in four languages.

Earlier in life she was very active outside, with downhill and cross country skiing, running, hiking, kayaking and sailing. Even after a surgery in 1999 left her with significant physical challenges, she remained very active and maintained an indomitable spirit. This event changed her life, and where many would have found reason to despair, Kay found only inspiration and hope. Her physical setbacks became a springboard which brought her to a deeper understanding of life and strengthened her commitment to spirituality, ultimately inspiring her to complete a doctorate of philosophy in Metaphysics degree from the American Institute of Holistic Theology in Birmingham, Ala.

Kay continued to be inspirational and always remained positive. She maintained her home, her gardens and an upbeat attitude, never wishing things different. She learned to live in harmony with her home and land.

Kay is survived by her father and stepmother: William H. (Retired Lieutenant NCPD) and Bertha P. “Petie” Jones of New Canaan; her sister Ingrid E. O’Reilly of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and her children Kristin O’Reilly and fiancé Carlos Pizan of Miami, Fla., Katelyn O’Reilly of Hermosa Beach, Calif. and Garrett O’Reilly of Chicago, Ill.; her aunt and uncle: Dorothy and Tom Myers of Cohasset, Mass. as well as many cousins, and numerous beloved extended family in Sweden. She is also survived by her special and close friends Carolyn (Callie) and Marty Amick of Maine and Bermuda. She was predeceased by her mother Ellen A. Jones and by two of her closest companions, her German Shepherds: Klaus and Silver Girl.

It was by Karin’s request that there be no public calling hours or services. Please take a moment to go out into nature and enjoy it as you recall and remember her, and those memories of her you hold special.

Fletcher Funeral Home and Cremation Services, (), 33 Marlboro St, Keene has been entrusted with the arrangements.
