Joan Mickle Ogden passed away peacefully on Dec. 30, 2015 at her home in Madison, Conn. surrounded by her loving family and cat Slim. She was 82.

Joan was born in New York City on Aug. 11, 1933 to Una Whitehurst Mickle and Kenneth Mickle. She graduated from Darien High School in 1951 and received her B.A. in art history from Smith College in 1955. Thereafter, Joan worked as a research assistant at the Frick Art Reference Library in New York City.

In 1958, Joan married Robert S. Ogden Jr. at St. Mark’s Church in New Canaan. Joan and Bob lived initially in New York City, where he was attending Columbia Law School, and then Pound Ridge, N.Y. In 1968 the couple moved to London, England when Bob opened the London office of the New York City law firm Donovan, Leisure, Newton & Irvine.

Their first daughter, Deborah, was born in 1968 and their second, Karen, was born in London in 1969.

All her life, Joan enjoyed exploring art, culture and history throughout Europe, having had her first taste of Europe during her junior year abroad in Geneva, Switzerland. During their twelve years in London, she and her family frequented the city’s museums and galleries, and they loved exploring the great houses and gardens of England, often on bicycle trips. Joan also loved the art galleries and markets in Paris, where Bob’s firm maintained an office, on the many occasions they were there.

Joan and the family were avid skiers and they drove through France every year to ski in the Alps. They were active tennis players and were members of Queens Club and The Hurlingham Club.

The Ogdens returned to the United States in 1980 and lived in Riverside, Conn. for 27 years. Joan pursued her great love of painting at her home studio in Riverside and was a member of the Greenwich Arts Council, The Greenwich Art Society, and the Silvermine Arts Center. She had exhibitions of her works in Greenwich, New Canaan, Darien, Rowayton, Silvermine, and in Manchester, Vt. She won numerous awards for her works. As Joan herself said regarding her art: “I enjoy placing objects in unexpected juxtapositions and scale to create new feelings about their relationship to their environment and to each other.” She thought of her work as “part still life and part narrative.” And she always felt, “My work is evolving as I continue to explore the world around me, incorporating found and treasured objects, artifacts and real elements of landscape.”

Joan’s creativity also flowed into her love of gardening and flowers, and she was an active member of the Riverside Garden Club and The Garden Education Center of Greenwich. She won many awards for her arrangements and loved conducting flower arrangement workshops for the Garden Club.

In 2007 Joan and Bob left Riverside and became residents of Sanibel, Fla., also living part of the year in Guilford, Conn. and Chester, Vt. In her later years Joan was burdened with problems stemming from Sjogren’s Syndrome and other health issues, but she continued to enjoy traveling, friends and her natural surroundings and to have fun with Bob and her two daughters and grandchildren.

Joan and Bob were members of the Riverside Yacht Club and Captiva Island Yacht Club.

Joan is survived by her husband of 57 years, Bob, her sister Lorna Chang Post of Clarksville, Md., her daughters Deborah Ogden of Bridgewater Corners, Vt., Karen Ogden Morse of Norwalk, Conn., her grandsons Schuyler and John Morse, and many loving nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich, Conn. on Saturday, May 7, at 11 a.m.

Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the The Greenwich Arts Society and the Connecticut Humane Society.

Robert E. Purcell

Robert E. Purcell

Robert E. Purcell, age 96, of Meadow Ridge in Redding, Conn., formerly a 46-year resident of New Canaan, died peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016.

Born in Arlington, Mass., on Jan. 25, 1919, Bob was the son of the late Daniel and Mary Doyle Purcell. He was predeceased by his wife Eleanor Casserly Purcell, who died in 1996.

Raised in Arlington, Bob was the youngest of five children. He attended Arlington High School while working on the family farm. Upon graduation from Boston University, where he majored in Education, he joined the U.S. Navy, receiving his commission as an officer. He was then sent to Cornell University to study Celestial Navigation, followed by Miami, Fla., for Submarine Chase training. Then Anti-Submarine Warfare, Gunnery School and Destroyer School, from there on to Pearl Harbor.

Lt. Purcell became Captain of a Sub Chaser in the Aleutian Islands, the Bering Strait and Japan. During the war, he spent many months in Hawaii recovering from back surgery due to injuries sustained while fighting the Japanese on the island of Attu. For his Naval service Lt. Purcell received the following medals: American Area Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal (1st Star) and the World War II Victory Medal.  He served his country from 1942-1947.

After the War, Bob began a career in textiles. While working for Manchester Hosiery Mills in New Hampshire, he met his future wife Eleanor, and they soon settled in Belmont, Mass. In the early 1960s, he and his family of four young children traded their Belmont home for a Mexican Diplomat’s home in Mexico City for three months. Thus planting the seed of international adventure in his children. In 1963 Bob moved his family to New Canaan, facilitating a continued career in New York City.

For the majority of his career he commuted into New York City, where he represented a variety of textile firms. His creativity and ingenuity led him to be the first to import Wolford Pantyhose to the United States. Private label work became a successful challenge, and custom brands included Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan, among others. Bob represented knitting mills throughout Germany, which fostered his love of German language, food and personal friendships. Bob remained young by way of his strong work ethic — he received his last order from The Vermont Country Store at the age of 92.

Bicycling from his home on South Avenue in New Canaan to meet “the boys” for breakfast at Lou’s Kitchen downtown kept Bob in shape for his passion — tennis. He played well into his 80s. He volunteered an immense amount of time to the development of tennis, especially for children. He helped establish the Southern New England Jr. Tennis Championships, co-founded the Parent-Child tournament at Mead Park, and served as treasurer of the National Indoor Platform Tennis Championships hosted by New Canaan High School. Most of his free time was spent on the tennis courts at The Lake Club or Mead Park, hitting tennis balls with his children and passing on his love of the game.

Throughout his life, Bob spent his summers on Cape Cod. As a youngster he was a bat boy for the Orleans Firebirds of the summer baseball league. As years passed, Bob spent hours playing in the waves with his grandchildren. He so loved the ocean that he earned his endearment “The Big Fish” for nipping at his grandchildren’s toes while swimming.

Bob is survived by one son, Robert B. Purcell and his wife Robin of Danville, Calif., three daughters, Louise P. Hemmerle and her husband Glenn of Wilton, Conn., Kate Purcell and her husband Kevin Plette of Burlington, Vt. and Eleanor Adams and her husband Brad of Sullivan’s Island, S.C. Also surviving Bob are six greatly loved grandchildren with whom he had much fun: Ford (wife Kady) and Sarah Adams, Heather and Ginny Purcell, and Ned and Meg Hemmerle, and two great-grandchildren, Wells and Hattie Adams.

In addition to his wife, Bob was predeceased by his granddaughter Eliza Adams Metz.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. at St Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in New Canaan.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to: The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, attn. Fr. Peter Le Jacq, MM, PO Box 302, Maryknoll, NY 10545 with IMO Bob Purcell written in the memo section.

John E. Warner, Jr.

John E. Warner, Jr.

John Entz Warner Jr. of New Canaan, passed away at Norwalk Hospital on Jan. 29, 2016. He was 84.

Jack was born Dec. 16, 1931 in Old Greenwich, Conn., son of John E. and Catherine G. Warner. He attended Greenwich schools and Bridgeport University.

Jack served in the U.S. Army for two years, stationed in Korea. After the war he partnered with his father in John E. Warner & Son building and developing many roads and houses in Greenwich, Darien and New Canaan. Some are Bickford Lane, Jennifer Lane, Winfield Lane, Woodway Ridge Lane, East and West Cross roads, and Hawks Hill Road. Their dream was to one day build a golf course and Jack Senior always wanted to “build a club in the country, not a country club.”

One day in 1958 while driving around Silvermine, Jack spotted the old Loudon Searcrest Dairy farm and realized this was the perfect place for a golf course. With hard work and enthusiasm they designed and built Silvermine Golf Club. The original Loudon barn still sits atop the hill on the highest part of Norwalk.Three years later they added Grey Hollow, an additional nine holes in Wilton with acquiring the Wilson Dairy Farm property.

Jack and his wife Barbara spent 29 winters in Marco Island, Fla. A most enthusiastic and avid fisherman, Jack spent the majority of his time fishing with his buddies and supplying fish to all of their condominium neighbors.

Jack was a former member of the Exchange Club, Rowayton Power Squadron and Sprite Island Yacht Club. Jack loved life, Long Island Sound, clamming, boating and sports. He was likable, lovable and had a contagious smile. “Everybody loved Jack,” his family reported.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, Barbara Orell Warner, Jack is survived by his three sons, John Entz Warner lll and wife Cynthia Walter Warner of Ashville, N.Y., Peter Gilbert Warner of New Canaan, and Thomas Morley Warner of New Canaan; his grandchildren: John Entz Warner lV and wife Dr. Brianne Teaboldt of Philadelphia, Pa; Caitlin Avery Warner Esq. and husband Ian James Lent of Washington, D.C., and Jeffrey Walter Warner also of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by a sister Catherine Warner Zucco of Naples, Fla. and a brother William Arthur Warner of Bonita Springs, Fla.

Douglas G. Noiles

Douglas G. Noiles

Douglas G. Noiles, 91, passed away peacefully in his New Canaan home on Jan. 25.

In a talk he gave some years ago, Mr. Noiles introduced himself like this: “The day I was born, I knew I wanted to be an engineer. The second day I was born, I knew I wanted to have my own business.”

An accomplished engineer and entrepreneur, Mr. Noiles held dozens of patents in the orthopaedics arena – most notably what became the DePuy artificial knee.

A love of aviation served as both a way to restore his energy and clear thinking and a metaphor for continuing to aim for the horizon.

Born in Nova Scotia, Canada, Mr. Noiles and his family emigrated to the United States when he was just one year old. Always grateful for the opportunities here in America, Mr. Noiles became a proud Marine and served the U.S. in WWII’s Pacific theater. He met his wife, Edna, a nurse at the Bethesda, Md. Naval Hospital when he was sent home with an injury.

After selling Joint Medical Systems, the company he co-founded with Anthony Whittingham, Mr. Noiles turned his full attention to philanthropic endeavors around the education of young children, most specifically in math and sciences. He and his wife were supporters of scholarships through CEO Foundation, founders of the Elon Academy, the K-12 program at WPI, and the Truitt Center for Religious & Spiritual Life.

Doug Noiles is survived by his wife of 70 years, Edna, their four children Daniel Noiles (wife Sheila), Alison Noiles (husband Laurence Gardner), Jonathan Noiles (wife Betsy) and Esther Noiles; 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Noiles will be laid to rest in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Mr. Noiles may be sent to:

The United Methodist Church of New Canaan, Special Programing Fund, 165 South Avenue, New Canaan CT 06840; or WPI, Attn: Gift Recording, 100 Institute Road, Worcester, MA 01609.

Please note that the memorial gift should be directed to the “Edna T. and Douglas G. Noiles ’44 Endowment for K-12 Outreach”

Jacqueline D. Fearey

Jacqueline D. Fearey

Jacqueline Lydia Dwight Fearey (Jackie) of New Canaan, and a resident of Meadow Ridge Senior Living in Redding, Conn., died peacefully in her sleep at Danbury Hospital on Jan. 16, 2016. She was 96.

Born in New York City on May 12, 1919, Jackie was the daughter of Lydia Butler Dwight and Maitland Dwight of New York City and Bedford, N.Y. She attended Chateau Brillantmont elementary school in Lausanne, Switzerland and graduated from the Chapin School in 1937. She then traveled in Europe and North Africa and briefly studied piano in Boston. During WWII, she worked for the English Speaking Union in New York City.

Jackie married Gordon Fearey in 1947 in New York City. They moved to New Canaan, where they raised four children. She was an active parent at New Canaan Country School, logging countless hours of carpooling to the New Canaan Winter Club. Comedy productions at mother-daughter events particularly energized her. Jackie joined the New Canaan Garden Club in 1954, and was a member for 62 years, serving as president from 1980-1982 and as a Garden Club of America director from 1985-1987. For 18 years, in addition to her other Garden Club activities, she organized weekly volunteers to create flower arrangements for the dining tables at Waveny Care Center, an assisted living facility in New Canaan.

Jackie moved to Meadow Ridge after Gordon’s death in 2000. As one of the first residents, she helped to create raised flower beds at the Laurel building and at the Assisted Living Center and for many years was head of the Meadow Ridge Grounds Committee. In her late 80s, Jackie single-handedly planted a perennial river bed of Candelabra Primrose off the woods path behind the Woodland Pond Trail, which remains to this day.

Jackie was fond of decorated hats, and games such as bridge and backgammon. She will be remembered for her zealous – some might say overzealous – participation in charades with her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was also an active tennis player.

Jackie is survived by her four children Lydia Fearey Key, Gordon Fearey Jr., Catherine Lenox Fearey, and David M. Fearey, 10 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on May 22, 2016 at St. Mark’s Church in New Canaan.

Memorial gifts may be made to the New Canaan Garden Club () or Heifer International ().
