Virginia Marjorie Lemons

Virginia Marjorie Lemons

Virginia Marjorie Lemons, 95 years young, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2015 at Holly Creek Retirement Community in Centennial, Colo. in the company of her oldest son, Charles. She remained alert, with a sense of humor, and thinking of others to the last.

Born in South Bend, Ind. on July 26, 1919 as Virginia Marjorie Voigt, she married Charles Frederick Lemons in 1941, and they had five sons.

Virginia (Ginny) was always hardworking, service-oriented, progressive and inclusive in her thinking and her love of others. She aspired to be a nurse from early on, encouraged by her younger brother Jack. She graduated from Memorial Hospital Nursing School as an RN, and worked much of her life full- or part-time. She loved being a nurse and brought endless tales (full of real life and humor) back home to share with her family.

Raising five boys, while her husband worked tirelessly as a CPA, she showed all of them core values of love, tolerance, honesty, hard work and humor. She taught each of them to embrace life, to take risks, that none of us is better than anyone else, that we are all part of the human family, that we should share our resources and knowledge and gifts with others — that we should walk along side of each other — not in front or in back, but together. She even had all male pets — dogs, cats, turtles, rabbits, fish — which she cherished late into her life.

She loved her family, and saw each of her sons through college and into various professions, married and having children and grandchildren. She loved young people, and rejoiced in her grandkids and great grandkids — loved their singing, their artwork, their photos, their stories, their ambitions, their adventures. And Virginia loved her husband and was with him always through a long journey with Alzheimer disease, until he died in 1996.

Her church family was part of her true family throughout her life, and her faith was as natural to her as breathing. Her faith was one of living, one that she quietly acted out genuinely each day. It revealed itself in all of her friends. Every time her sons (as adults living all over the country) would visit her, they thought that they had already met all of her friends, but then they would meet 10 or 20 new ones — people would come to her just to spend time in her presence. She was kind, humble, interesting and interested, caring and humorous.

She loved fishing, digging in the garden, watching her kids play marbles and baseball, reading good books, playing scrabble, writing old fashioned letters to friends around the country, to her brother-in-law in Switzerland and his family, and to close friends in Kenya. She went to Kenya twice after she was 70 years old with members of her Connecticut church, Noroton Presbyterian Church.

Virginia understood the foibles of life, the challenges we all seem to create or have to face, the strengths and frailties we all have, the beauty of nature which she never lost touch with, the richness and harmony that love brings. She lived simply, not wanting for anything because she didn’t want anything – other than family, friends and faith. She truly understood the meaning of life — as “walking each other home” — and she knew it wasn’t necessary to be carrying a lot of stuff.

Virginia is survived by all of her sons and their wives: Charles, Jr. and Eileen (with children David and Ashley Lemons, John and Jennifer Turner), James and Pamela (with children Ken, Kevin, David and Meghan Costa), Richard and Diana (with children Alex, Sam and Meg), Robert and Robin (with children Jonathan and Lucy Lemons, James and Kristen Bierman, Robbie and Katie), David and Anna (with children Katie, Christopher and Stephen). In addition there are seven great-grandchildren.

Virginia made the world a better, kinder place — she always seemed to see things clearly as her values were simple and straightforward. Right and wrong appeared to be easy for her, because love always led the way. She cared about people, animals, lakes, flowers, trees, rocks, stars and our Creator — the whole Creation — and she cared about each and every one of us, one at a time. She has all of our love forever.

A private memorial service is planned for sometime later this year at Noroton Presbyterian Church in Darien, Conn., where Virginia will be with her husband.

In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to the Alzheimers Foundation, Broadmoor Community Church in Colorado Springs, Noroton Presbyterian Church in Darien, or the Nambale Magnet School in Kenya (www.nambalemagnet.org).

Obituary: Nancy B. McDaniel, 83 longtime resident

Nancy B. McDaniel of Naples, Fla. and New Canaan died peacefully April 24, 2015 surrounded by her loving husband, Jack D. McDaniel, and her family.

She was born on Jan. 3, 1932 in Oakland, Calif. to Ted and Margaret Beebe. She was a graduate of Oakland High School and San Francisco City College.

The McDaniels have three children: John C., and James S. McDaniel, of Phoenix, Ariz. and Jennifer A. McDaniel of Westwood, Calif.

A devoted mother, Nancy was best known in her younger days as a decorator, model and tennis player in addition to her greatest love — her husband and family.

As the years rolled by, Nancy became deeply involved in a variety of charities —  Peralta Hospital, Waveny Care Center and New Canaan’s Festival of Trees. In taking responsibility for three Festival of Trees shows, Nancy’s team decorated and presented over 300 trees plus wreaths, garlands and more. It was the largest show ever presented in New Canaan and was covered by CBS.

Nancy operated a Christmas and home decorating company called That Special Touch.

In later years, Nancy added two new interests: A charity, the Shelter for Abused Women and Children, and building a world class doll house. As usual, Nancy had a significant impact on both of her new interests.

However, Nancy is best known for her love of people. Consistently upbeat — in spite of serious personal health problems — she always offered encouraging words, support, and sound but practical advice to her friends. For this, she is loved by many. As a result, Nancy had an enormous group of friends. If Nancy were here she would want to pass along one final comment, used to conclude every conversation, phone call, or letter. It is, “I love you.”

In lieu of flowers, or the like, the family asks for a donation in her name to any favorite charity of your choosing.

One of Nancy’s favorites was Shelter for Abused Women and Children, P.O. Box 10102, Naples, FL 34101 or www.naplesshelter.org.

A memorial service is planned in New Canaan later this year.

Louise Foote Besson, 103, longtime active resident

new-canaan-besson.vert.jpg

Louise Foote Besson, a resident of New Canaan since 1947, died on Friday, June 5, 2015, at her current residence, The Greens of Cannondale in Wilton, Conn. She was halfway through her 104th year.

Louise was born of American parents in Munich, Germany in 1911, where her father, Dr. Nathan C. Foot, was working with a mentor on the emerging science of pathology. The family returned to Milton, Mass., where Louise spent her early childhood. They moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in the early 1920s, where she and her sister attended the newly formed Lotspeich School, of which her mother Emma May Foot, was a founder.

Graduating on into The Hillsdale School, the two sisters collaborated on writing the school song. Both schools have since evolved into what is now the prestigious Seven Hills School in Cincinnati.

Louise showed early musical talent and studied the violin from the age of five. In 1930, she was accepted to Smith College, but chose instead to pursue her music, working with teachers both in New York and abroad. In 1937 she made her New York concert debut at Town Hall as solo violinist with the Women’s Chamber Orchestra of New York, under the name Louise Foote — adding the e back onto her family name, which her grandfather (James D. Foot, an early land developer of Rye, N.Y.) had removed, saying bluntly, A foot is a foot!

For the next four years she played numerous concerts in the tri-state area and beyond. Eugene Goossens, conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony said of her, (She is) a violinist of very considerable attainment, who combines with her artistry a striking personality. Her playing is sensitive and assured and she possesses a beautiful tone and mature style…I venture to prophesy for her a career of considerable brilliance.

Louise married John Case Besson of New York in 1941. After WWII, they moved to New Canaan, where Louise taught violin, played concerts in the area, and was active in the community and at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. She and her husband led Great Books groups at the New Canaan Library in the 1950s, and Louise continued to be a member of several Book groups until the age of 99. During the 1960s Louise was on the board of The World Affairs Center in Westport — a hub of information for the socially conscious. She was active in the anti-nuclear and peace movements, and marched several times on Washington.

In the 1970s, for relaxation and exercise, Louise joined the YMCA, where she became a member of a group of synchronized swimmers that gave several Water Ballet performances at New Canaan’s YMCA. About this time, she also renewed her musical involvement, spending two summers at Colby College in Vermont working with the Hungarian String Quartet. After the death of her husband in 1982, she joined the St. Mark’s Church choir, and in the early 1990s, Mrs. Besson went on the board of the Waveny Chamber Music Society at The Carriage Barn in New Canaans Waveny Park. She was involved in the screening and choice of chamber groups for each season, often writing the program notes for the pieces to be performed. She also became the reviewer for all the concerts given, and developed quite a following for her incisive musical reviews in the New Canaan Advertiser.

At the age of 95, Louise moved into The New Canaan Inn on Oenoke Ridge, the independent living arm of Wavenys senior care complex. There she flourished in a new direction, writing two self-published memoirs: one about her early childhood in Milton, and the second about her adventures abroad and her early concert career. At the age of 98, she won third place in a poetry competition sponsored by Connecticut Community Care, Inc.

Mrs. Besson is survived by her three children, Cassia Farkas Ward of Norwalk, Conn.; Elise B. Misiorowski of Patagonia, Ariz.; Jonathan C. F. Besson of Pittsburg, Calif,; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St. Marks Episcopal Church in New Canaan, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 20. A reception will follow in St. Marks Morrill Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Louise Besson’s name to either the St. Mark’s Church Music Fund, 111 Oenoke Ridge, New Canaan, CT 06840; or The New Canaan Library, Main Street, New Canaan, CT 06840.
