Nancy Eleanor Bernier

Mrs. Nancy Eleanor (Chisholm) Bernier, 48, of Norwalk, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2015 at her home in Norwalk.

Nancy was born in New Rochelle, N.Y. on Aug. 24, 1966, daughter of Barbara (Draught) Chisholm and the late Don Chisholm. She was a special needs caretaker for The Department of Mental Retardation for over 15 years, as well as serving in the same capacity for several other private organizations.

Nancy was truly a 'giver' as she spent much of her time volunteering for many charities and was always the first to offer support or a helping hand. Nancy was an accomplished equestrian rider, specifically show jumping and was happiest when surrounded by friends and family.

She leaves behind her mother, Barbara Chisholm of New Canaan, her husband Rory Bernier of Norwalk, two daughters, Kaitlyn Cassella and Kimberly Marshall, both of Norwalk, and a brother, Don Chisholm of Boca Raton, Fla. She was predeceased by her father and her sister, Linda Gaydosh.

Obituary: Stephen F. Zangrillo, father of resident

Stephen F. Zangrillo

Stephen F. Zangrillo

Stephen Frank Zangrillo, 91, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2015 at his home in Darien. He was surrounded by his family.

Born on Dec. 26, 1923, Mr. Zangrillo was a lifelong Darien resident. The son of the late Mae and Patsy Zangrillo, he was born in their home on Fitch Ave. He was also predeceased by his brother Peter Zangrillo, and his sisters Ann Sherwood and Ceil Danna.

Mr. Zangrillo served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-45 as an army corporal in the South Pacific. When he returned from the war, he opened the Darien Sport Shop on Aug. 1, 1946.

He founded the store with little to no money in his pocket, but saw the business grow and expand over the years to what is now considered a town landmark and shopping destination in Fairfield County.

Mr. Zangrillo had a knack for building relationships with his customers. If a young man couldn’t afford a suit that he wanted, he gave it to him anyway, trusting his customer to come back and pay for it when he could. If a young boy couldn’t afford the baseball glove he wanted, he let the boy have it anyway, as long as the boy paid him back. He knew the only way to earn the trust of the people of Darien, was to put his trust in them.

While much of his career consisted of running the day to day operations, he spent his later years greeting his customers and friends at the front door. He ran his business under one main principle: the customer is always right.

Mr. Zangrillo dedicated his life to serving the town of Darien through his store and charitable efforts. He was a charter member of the Country Club of Darien in 1956, where he was the first men’s golf club champion in 1957. He served as the President of the Darien Chamber of Commerce in 1960 and he donated the first ambulance to Post 53 in 1976.

He also hosted the community at the annual Christmas tree lighting in the Darien Sport Shop parking lot every year since 1978. When the 100 foot tree was taken down in 2009 due to storm damage, he insisted the tree be replaced so the annual tree lighting would continue to be held every year.

Mr. Zangrillo continued to open his store every day well past his 90th birthday. He loved his store, and the town.

His family was his greatest success though. He loved his wife, his four children, and six grandchildren more than anything.

He is survived by his wife, Yolanda; his son Stephen Jr. and his wife Pam, his son Anthony and his wife Gina, his daughters Stephanie, and Gina; his six grandchildren, Stephen III and his wife Danielle, Gregory Reilly, Nicholas Neville, Douglas Reilly, Samantha Neville, Allison Reilly, and his brother Robert.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John’s Church, 1986 Post Road, Darien on Monday, July 13 at 11 am.  Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Darien EMS Post 53, P. O. Box 2066, Darien, CT 06820 or the United States Wounded Soldiers Foundation, 11700 Preston Road, Ste. 660, PMB 135, Dallas, TX 75230.  www.lawrencefuneralhome.com

Sally Harding Storrs Daniel

Sally Harding Storrs Daniel

Sally Harding Storrs Daniel, 84, of New Canaan and Chatham, Mass., passed away peacefully Monday, July 6. Members of her family were with Sal as she moved to the great beyond.

Variously known as Sal, Sally or, for a time, Monk (before she sternly put an end to that nickname), Sally was born in Hartford, Conn. on Dec. 26, 1930. There was a period of time when Sal thought the proximity of her birthday to Christmas was cheating her of birthday gifts, but her family doesn’t believe this was the case.

Sally grew up in West Hartford where, while considered an indifferent student, she had the benefit of being “very cute, perky and fun.” Sal graduated from the University of Connecticut, in her namesake Storrs, Conn., where she and her two sisters reveled in being the Three Storrs Girls. Sally was quietly proud of the role the Storrs and Harding families played in the early settlement and creation of our country, and of her membership in The Society of Mayflower Descendants and the DAR.

Sal generally lived on the straight and narrow, though she howled with laughter when revealing that, after being spotted trying her first cigarette as a young teen, she was knocked to the ground by an unseen clothesline while fleeing across the backyards of West Hartford. Sally spent the summers of her youth in Giant’s Neck, Conn., and Pine Point, Maine. It was in Giant’s Neck that Sal met Ron Daniel, who would become the love of her life.

Sally was married in 1953. After a few years as a Navy wife, and living on bases in Newport, Athens, Georgia and Philadelphia, Sally settled in first in Glenbrook, and finally in Darien, where she began the task of raising three boys.

Days were always busy for Sally, whether shuttling the boys to Little League or Boy Scouts, or spending time with her friends in the Junior League or at the DCA. At home, Sally’s cooking was fabled, though not always for the right reasons. While her brownies were legendary, a flip through her recipe box suggests that dishes like Molded Tuna Loaf, Carrot Casserole or Curried Fruit Bake were not as timeless. If there were a prize to be given for the ability to extract the most edible matter from a lobster, Sally would have surely won it.

Sal is the adored mother to three boys — David, Peter and Stephen, the cherished mother-in-law to Jeanne and Mary Beth, and the “always smiling, happy-to-see-you” spoiler of eight grandchildren. She will be profoundly missed by all of us.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. For more information or to leave online condolences visit www.hoytfuneralhome.com

Simone Jeanine Whitlock, a resident of Melbourne, Fla. and a former longtime resident of New Canaan, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2015 in Melbourne. Born on Aug. 17, 1926 in Ville De Reims, France, she was the daughter of the late Marcel Jules and Marcelle Lucile Lambotin Brioux.

Simone was the wife of the late Dr. James A. Whitlock, founder of The New Canaan Veterinary Hospital where Simone was the office manager. She was an avid sportswoman who enjoyed archery, golf, tennis and cycling. Her passion was art. Her paintings will live on bringing joy and happiness to her family and friends.

Simone met her husband James A. Whitlock during World War II in 1945 in Normandy where he found her sunbathing when he was fishing. He was amazed by a woman who could find a way to sun herself during a war. It also helped that she told him where to catch fish. I think she was the catch of his life. They both retired to Melbourne in 1988.

Rose Peabody Parsons Lynch, 92, and mother, grandmother and great grandmother, died at her home in New Canaan this past Saturday, July 11, after a brief illness.

Known as Rosie, she was born in New York City on July 1, 1923, the oldest daughter of William Barclay Parsons, Jr. M.D., and Rose Peabody Parsons. Her grandparents were Endicott Peabody, founder of the Groton School, and his wife Fanny Peabody, and William Barclay Parsons, founder of an engineering firm that later became Parsons Brinkerhoff, and chief engineer of the first subway in New York City and the Cape Cod Canal, and his wife Anna Reed Parsons.

Rosie was passionate about her extended family, the Groton School and, most of all, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. At the time of her death, she was an Honorary Council member of the Women’s Prison Association, on whose board she served for 45 years from 1969-2014 and as president from 1976 to 1979. Later in life, she was devoted to Staying Put, serving as an enthusiastic volunteer for the organization based in New Canaan, which is dedicated to serving the needs of the community’s senior citizens. In everything she did, Rosie brought both a strong hand and an even stronger sense of humor, which all who knew her will remember as her most endearing quality, according to the family.

She will be deeply missed by her children, Rose Peabody Lynch of Greenwich, Conn. and New York City, R. Vincent Lynch, Jr. of New York City and his wife Cynthia, and Alexander Parsons Lynch of Greenwich and his wife Sally, as well as her eight grandchildren and six, soon-to-be seven, great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully received by Staying Put, 58 Pine Street, New Canaan, CT 06840. A memorial service will be held in her honor in New Canaan in September. To leave online condolences, please visit hoytfuneralhome.com
